The 12 Days of YouTube

Well, NaNoWriMo is over, my Christmas shopping is almost completed, and now it’s time for a long-overdue update to my long-neglected blog.  And since it is the season to be jolly, I’ve decided to post something to fit the times.

I’ve given it some thought, and I’m going to combine two of my favorite pastimes, watching internet short films and all things Christmas.  So without further ado, here are my top 12 favorite Christmas short films.  These are the twelve most twisted, hilarious, and heart warming videos I’ve found on the internet.  Enjoy :)

#1 CollegeHumor’s “The Twelve Beards of Christmas”

The title pretty much says it all.

#2 “Gift of Ages” by JonSu

I found this on Deviantart a while back. He described it as “a brief Nativity story shown from the perspective of the spirit of winter.”  To this day I choke up a little every time I watch it.  For anyone who loves for Christmas, even if they don’t view it as a particularly religious holiday, this will give them an interesting change in perspective.  It certainly had that effect on me.

#3 “Nicholas Was” by Neil Gaiman

Taken straight from one of Neil Gaiman’s darker tales, the guy in this video managed to tell an already chilling story with  such perfect delivery and well-chosen music to accompany it. Well done.

#4 “12 Days” by Straight No Chaser

Who doesn’t love a good humorous mash-up?

#5 CollegeHumor’s “Honest Holiday Card Song”

It’s a commonly held belief that a picture is worth a thousand words.  This video is proof that sometimes those words aren’t what you expect…

#6 CollegeHumor’s “The Six Christmas Movies You’ll Live Through”

“Ethics aside, scientists say a dozen four-year olds under the influence of Christmas could power Missouri for the next 500 years.”  Speaking as a proud resident of St. Louis, as soon as I heard this line I knew I had to add this to the list :)

#7 “Celtic Carol” by Lindsey Stirling

This one is strictly musical, but damn is it well done. I put this at #2 of my favorite contemporary Christmas songs.

#8 “I’m Santa and I Know it” by BarelyPolitcal

A decent Christmas parody of the LMFAO hit song.

#9 “Epic Rap Battles of History: Moses vs Santa Claus” by Nice Peter, Epic Lloyd, and Featuring Snoop Dogg (!?)

The Epic Rap Battles of History videos are some of my favorite guilty pleasures. I mean, where else can the greatest figures of history and fiction face off in the ultimate battle of words?  However, as soon as I saw this video I did a small double take when I realized who was playing the role of Moses.

#10 “Carol of the Bells” by The Piano Guys

If “Celtic Carol” is number two on my list of favorite contemporary Christmas music, this is number one.

#11 “No Santa” by SMBC Theater

Some Christmas revelations are less than kind.  I won’t lie, this particular Christmas scenario is more than a little messed up.

#12 “A Very Calvin and Hobbes Christmas” by Jim Frommeyer (inspired by Bill Watterson)

This was a wonderful homage to what was undoubtedly the greatest literary influence of my childhood.  Calvin and Hobbes was a wonderful combination of absurdity, philosophical thought, and the power of imagination.  No strips captured these qualities more than the ones with Calvin’s famous snow scultptures.
